This memorial is to remember the 228 people now feared dead after Air France Flight AF 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris disappeared over the Atlantic.
Contact with the plane was lost five hours and 20 minutes after it took off from Rio in Brazil at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday 31 May 2009.
Officials have now admitted that there was "no hope" of finding any survivors from the 216 passengers and 12 crew onboard. The passenger list is said to include 80 Brazilians, 73 French, 18 Germans, nine Italians and six Americans, Five Britons and two Irish citizens and a Canadian. Among the passengers there were seven children and a baby). The flight also carried 12 crew members, including the pilot and co-pilot.
Airline and government officials believe the Airbus A330-200 crashed after running into lightning and thunderstorms over the Atlantic Ocean. French aviation officials say they may never find the jet's flight data recorders, which could be under waters 3,700m (12,100ft) deep.
Searchers have found a plane seat, a life jacket, metallic debris and signs of fuel β spotted from the air about 410 miles north of the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, said a Brazilian Air Force spokesman yesterday.
Unconfirmed reports in a Portuguese newspaper said passengers on board sent text messages saying "I love you" and "I am scared" to relatives when they realised their plane was in trouble. A report in the Jornal de Noticias cited a Brazilian official from an aviation union.
The Air France flight was full β Monday was a French bank holiday and Brazil is an increasingly popular tourist destination among the French.
